ADVANCED SUPERVISOR TRAINING PROGRAM
45 HOUR PROGRAM OUTLINE
SUPERVISOR TRAINING CREATED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU.
The Advanced Supervisor Training Program at the Mentoring Institute is designed exclusively for Michigan Licensed Professional Counselors.
The goals of this program are to assist potential supervisors 1) to understand: a) models of supervision; b) roles, functions qualities and competencies of supervisors; c) effective supervision techniques; d) counselor scope of practice, supervision requirements for licensure and other legal issues; e) administrative issues in supervision; and 2) to develop a competent and ethical practice in supervision.
I. Module 1 (6 Hours). Trainees will receive a publication entitled Counselor Licensure and Scope of Practice in Michigan. They will be asked to read this publication, view a video, and use this material as a reference throughout the program.
II. Module 2 (16 Hours). Trainees will read the workbook entitled Becoming an Effective Supervisor by Dr. Jane Campbell, and will be asked to complete selected assignments
III. Module 3 (8 Hours). Trainees will select and complete one of the Mentoring Institute’s 5-Hour Home Study Programs. Trainees will also meet with a “supervisee” for not less than 3 hours and will share learnings from this experience.
IV. Module 4 (15 Hours). Trainees will complete the Mentoring Institute’s 15 Hour Home Study Program on Utilizing Technology in Clinical Supervision.

Cost of the program is $924.00 ($1024 for MITS registrants), and those completing it will receive 45 NBCC-approved clock hours and meet Michigan Board of Counseling Requirements for Supervisors as well as training requirements for the Approved Clinical Supervisor Credential (ACS).
The Mentoring Institute has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5019. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Mentoring Institute is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
Your Instructors
Dr. Sara Sue Schaeffer and her husband, Dr. Donald Amidon have been in counseling for over 30 years. Between them they have experience in: private practice, school counseling, EAPs, substance abuse counseling, marriage and family therapy, trauma recovery, loss and grief, depression, anxiety, counseling in the VA system, PTSD, faith-based counseling, adjunct faculty at Western Michigan University, supervision of interns, supervision of LLPCs, and more. Both are Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, National Certifed Counselors, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselors, Master Addictions Counselors and Approved Cinical Supervisors.
Dr. Schaeffer is one of the main authors of Michigan's Counselor Licensure Law and worked for 14 years to insure its passage. As first Chair of the Michigan Board of Counseling, she holds the first counselor license issued in the State of Michigan. She was also one of the main authors and advocates for the 2019 Law. Dr. Schaeffer is the expert on Michigan Counselor Licensing Law. Information presented is accurate, in-depth, reliable and current.
